Our Top 20 Recommended Books:

These books have all been read and personally recommended by parents of children with autism.
  1. The Autistic Spectrum : A Guide for Parents and Professionals, Lorna Wing ISBN 0 09 475160 9. Lorna Wing is one of the most respected experts in the field, as well as being the parent of an autistic daughter. If you are a parent and only want to get one book which will tell you all you need to know, get this one.
  2. Asperger's Syndrome : A Guide for Parents and Professionals by Tony Attwood. Tony Attwood, is a practicing clinical psychologist with a vast and somewhat intimate knowledge of Asperger's syndrome. The book, which was long awaited , first published in 1998 has received much acclaim predominantly from parents desperate to find a more down to earth explanation of the disorder. Attwood succeeds in relating the complex information without the technical jargon on which many other books seem to depend. His theory is simple - "if you can not provide an explanation in simple terms, you do not understand what you are talking about". Within the book are personal insights from those with Asperger syndrome, wonderful anecdotes, strategies to deal with problems of social interaction, communication etc. and helpful end of chapter summaries, just perfect for showing to the service providers. There are specific sections also on diagnosis, language, interests and routines along with a comprehensive and informative "Frequently asked questions". Tony Attwood has a wonderful sense of humour and this is obvious throughout. His ideas offer reassurance and give optimism that this disorder brings many strengths along with the difficulties. He gives welcome acknowledgment to the role the parents have played in the guiding of these wonderful people to fulfil as happy a life as possible. This book is to be savoured and returned to frequently to help with explanations and strategies for the different and diverse problems that are likely to occur over time. (Reviewed by Roz Lord, CASSEL)
  3. Pretending to be Normal by Liane Holliday Willey. ISBN 1 85302 749 9. If you have a daughter with Asperger Syndrome then this is a 'must' to read. If you are a woman and have ever wondered if you are borderline yourself then again, you must read this. This is the story of a so called higher functioning lady with AS, that rung lots of bells with me. She didnt have a terrible childhood, her parents were even quite decent! - but she shows in this book how, even with all the best starters in life, having Asperger Syndrome just causes you to feel somewhat removed and confused so much of the time.
  4. Autism: The Facts, Simon Baron Cohen and Patrick Bolton ISBN -0-19-2623273. Probably the best beginners guide to autism. Very clear and concise, it's very useful for lending to family and friends who want to know about autism.
  5. Autism, Explaining the Enigma, by Uta Frith 1SBN 0 631 16824 9 A fascinating book with interesting new ideas that are well argued.
  6. Autism - An Introduction to Psychological Theory, Francesca Happe (U.C.L.Press) ISBN 0 6 74053 117. This is an interesting book that manages to present the latest research and theories in a fairly accessible way.
  7. Let Me Hear Your Voice - A Family's Triumph Over Autism, Catherine Maurice (Hale) ISBN 0 44 99 06 647. The author had two autistic children who were both , apparently, cured by using an intensive behaviour modification programme called Lovaas therapy. Well written and enlightening on many issues.
  8. The Siege: The First Eight Years of an Autistic Child, by Clara Claiborne Park Boston and London: Little, Brown, 1982. A personal and involving account by a mother who brought up her autistic daughter in the '60s.
  9. Through the Eyes of Aliens by Jasmine Lee O'Neill ISBN 1 85302 710 3. This is without doubt one of the most wonderful books I've ever read. Although her views on non-intervention go too far in my opinion, many of the things she beautifully described hit home wonderfully well. Jasmine is autistic and mute yet revels in her way of life. She describes her autistic way of life with such conviction that it fills you with hope. I'd recommend this book to anyone. (Reviewed by Steve Law, parent).
  10. There's a Boy in Here by Judy Barron and Sean Barron. A mother and her son tell the story of his emergence from autism. ISBN 1 85592 634 2. As a child Sean rarely spoke and seemed to enjoy defying his parents and teasing his sister. Now an adult who is no longer autistic he writes with surprising insight about how he felt as a child and why he behaved as he did. Only available from Amazon.co.uk in the U.K.
  11. The Sound Of A Miracle by Annabel Stehli ISBN 0 9644 838 15. The author's daughter was, it seems, cured of autism by Auditory Integration Training. The book is moving and well written, and is worth reading even if you are not interested in A.I.T.
  12. Emergence : Labeled Autistic by Temple Grandin ISBN 044 667 1827. An autobiographical account by a university professor of her childhood and methods she used to cope with living with autism. Well written and easy to read, it gives a fascinating insight into the sensory problems some autistics have to deal with.
  13. Autism and Asperger Syndrome, ed. Uta Frith ISBN 0 521 38608 X. The title is a bit misleading as this collection of essays is mainly about Aspergers syndrome, including a translation of Aspergers original paper. Very theoretical, this book is mainly of interest to those who already know quite a bit about Aspergers syndrome but still want to know more.
  14. Steps to Independence: Teaching Everyday Skills to Children With Special Needs, Baker & Brightman, ISBN 1 557 662 681.
  15. Nobody Nowhere, Donna Williams ISBN 03 807 221 78. An autobiographical account of the authors early life until she was diagnosed autistic in her twenties. Abused as a child, the book is harrowing in places. But her explanations for her actions and behaviour make interesting reading for any parent trying to understand the mind of an autistic child.
  16. An Anthropologist on Mars, Oliver Sacks (Picador) ISBN 06 797 569 73. This book has one chapter on Stephen Wiltshire, the boy with autism who does incredibly detailed and accurate drawings of buildings, and another on Temple Grandin, the autistic woman who is an expert on designing cattle chutes .
  17. Autism An Inside-Out Approach, by Donna Williams ISBN 1 85302 387 6. The author is herself autistic and has lots of fresh ideas and insights into the condition. Her writing style takes a bit of getting used to, but it's worth persevering with.
  18. Teaching Developmentally Disabled Children (The Me Book) by Dr. lvar Lovaas ISBN 0 936104 78 3. The manual on Lovaas Therapy (a new, updated edition is rumoured to be coming out soon). It shows in step-by-step detail how to teach an autistic child a whole range of basic language and social behaviours by using a very intensive behaviour modification programme.
  19. Getting Through to Your Handicapped Child, by Elizabeth Newson & Tony Hipgrave, ISBN 0 521 27056 1
  20. Making Music With The Young Child With Special Needs by Elaine Streeter ISBN 1 853 02187 3
