This conference is for anyone interested in the education of children with autism or Asperger Syndrome, especially parents, teachers and special needs staff.   It will cover both high-functioning children in mainstream schools and the less able child in a special school setting. There will also be a session on the law relating to special educational needs provision and one on how the Education Authority in Surrey is addressing the needs of children in this area.  Issues to be covered include:

·        the pros and cons of mainstream and special schools

·        teaching strategies

·        managing behaviour

 

Speakers:

Dr. Rita Jordan  is Reader in Autism Studies at the University of Birmingham’s School of Education.  Dr. Jordan was Deputy Principal of an autism-specific special school for eight and a half years. She has researched and published widely on aspects of educational provision and learning styles in autistic spectrum disorders.

Dr. Paul Gray is Executive Director for Children and Young People at Surrey County Council, with overall responsibility for Education, Community and Children’s Services.  He was previously Surrey’s Director of Education.

Dr. Nick Armstrong  is a barrister who lectures and publishes widely on public law and civil justice.  He has a particular interest in education law including special educational needs, and regularly appears on behalf of parents at the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal.
